Having a lot of time off over the summer months is one of the big perks of being a student. It gives you time to recoup and have a small break from studying in what can be a very intensive learning period in your life.
Unfortunately however, for most students this time off cannot be spent simply lazing around and catching up on reading – in order to keep your head above water during this downtime it’s likely that you’ll need to work. If you have debts then paying this off over the summer can help you to repair your credit ready for the future. Using this summer time to your advantage and getting your finances on track can be done in many different ways. Read on to find out more…
Many big summer events, such as sports games, festivals and fairs require mobile food and drink sellers. Get in contact with organisers to find out who is catering and offer your services. Not only will you get to meet lots of people and attend events for free, but you’ll also make some money too.
Become a Lifeguard
Training to become a lifeguard may be offered free through your university, so make the most of this if you can. Once trained, you can work as a lifeguard almost anywhere, and it’ll often involve sitting next to a pool or on the beach – the perfect way to enjoy summer.
Have a Clear Out
Use your spare time to have a big clear out of your things, or even your parent’s things with their permission. Listing items on eBay, repairing broken items and repurposing things to sell can make you more money than you realise, and you get to be your own boss!
If you want a simple summer job, then seasonal work in cafes or pubs is often available, especially if you live somewhere historical or on the coast. Cleaning holiday chalets, pulling pints and manning the till at your local shop can all give you plenty of opportunity to save a bit of cash and perhaps pay off any debts you may have.
Arts & Crafts
If you’re creative and you enjoy making things, then why not look into selling your wares to local craft shops or online via Etsy or eBay? Crocheted brooches, beach jewellery, artwork for the walls and even creative baking can keep you nice and busy and help you earn some extra cash too.
Babysitting & Pet Care
If you’re good with children or animals (or both!) then why not advertise your services in your local paper, online and in the windows of your local shops as a baby- or pet-sitter? Many people go away in the summer or stay out later in the evenings so the demand is likely to be high, and when it comes to children and pets, people are usually willing to pay a decent wage.
