Norwich has been chosen as the first city in the UK to host Cancer Research UK’s new SlideRider event, which will see thrillseekers plummet down a 100 metre inflatable three-lane water slide.
The slide, which will be open from 11am to 10pm on Saturday, will start on the top of the hill on Theatre Street by St Stephen’s Church down to Rampant Horse Street by Debenhams.
All riders will pay £10 for two trips down the slide and must use an inflatable ring, provided by the organisers of the event.
Money raised will go towards supporting Cancer Research UK’s Kids and Teens Fundraising Campaign.
Clive Sanders, Head of Events at Cancer Research UK, said: “We’re delighted to host our first SlideRider event in Norwich. We hope people from across Norfolk will embrace this exhilarating new challenge and seize the opportunity to slip, slide and support life-saving research.
“Places are limited so we’re urging people to sign up now.”
Danielle Glavin, of Cancer Research UK, added: “We provide our own inflatables as they require handles and be of a certain size, meaning not all inflatables are suitable for the slide.
“People wishing to take part can wear anything they want on the slide. This is the first time we have put the slide in a city after we first tested it out at the Isle of Wight festival.
“It looks like we will have the right weather for the weekend which will make it even better.”
The slide in Norwich follows similar slides that have been put in cities such as Birmingham and Manchester through different organisations. The city water-slide is a craze which has just arrived to the country after becoming very popular in the USA.
Helen Selleck, events and culture manager at Norwich City Council, said: “We have been pushing all year to bring the slide over to Norwich, and it is a great event to add to the schedule for the Lord Mayor’s festivities.
“If there is good weather on Saturday it should go down very well and become one of the most popular attractions over the weekend, and hopefully can become a regular addition to the Lord Mayor’s Celebrations calendar.
The Kids and Teens fundraising campaign is raising money to accelerate research to find cures and treatments for children, teenagers and young adults with cancer.
People who wish to take part should be aged eight or over. You can register online or buy a ticket online until midnight this Friday, July 3, or buy a ticket on the day.
